Over 900 million viewers watched the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Ceremonies. It is, by any measure, one of the most watched spectacles in television history. Notably one of the greatest projects we have had the pleasure of being part of. Working with Crystal CG, our role covered ultra large LED content and animation across the ceremonies. The scale of the brief was unlike anything we had worked on before, and the technical challenge reflected that.
For the first time in history, stadium seating was used as a full 360 degree screen. This was an entirely new application of LED technology that had never been attempted at this scale. Our experience in large scale LED work was central to how the team navigated that challenge, contributing to the development of treatments alongside the art directors. Additionally, helping shape how the visuals would work across a surface of that size and complexity.
Alongside the creative development, we produced detailed pre-vis that was then used directly on the media servers. This provided the wider team a clear and accurate picture of how the content would behave in the space before the event itself. The result was seen by the world and we are proud to have played a part in it. Jamie took on a pivotal role across the production, ensuring the pre-vis was accurate, supporting the wider team through the demands of a project at this scale, modelling and rendering several 3D scenes using a 360 degree camera to fully immerse the audience. That contribution saw him become the only animator to work across all four ceremonies.
