For the first time in its history, the National Gallery permitted projection within the gallery space itself. The brief was to create a series of animations that would interact with the existing artwork and temporary installations, bringing the art to life as part of a significant fundraising event.
Our constraints were surrounding the lighting within the gallery. No light could cast onto any of the priceless artworks. This shaped every decision made throughout the project from how the projections were positioned to how the content was designed and tested before the event opened.
We worked closely with the AV supplier to ensure the technical setup met the strict criteria set by the gallery. That collaboration was central to delivering within those parameters without losing what the brief was actually asking for. A fun and characterful animation that complemented the evening's entertainment and sat comfortably within one of the country's most significant cultural spaces.
Being trusted to work within the National Gallery and to do so in a way that respected both the space and the art, is something we don't take lightly. For a first of its kind brief, the gallery's conditions were honoured, the projections were highly praised and the evening was a success. It was a pleasure to work alongside Sir Patrick Kinmonth in bringing these vibrant storyboards to life.
This project was completed for Patrick Kinmonth:
"I am more than happy to confirm the remarkable talent and professionalism, the collaborative creativity and technical mastery, and overall exceptionally valuable contribution that Jamie Shiels and his studio have brought to our work together. He has consistently understood the briefs I have shared with him, and managed to bring magic to some highly delicate projects, including our takeover of the National Gallery in London where immersive videos ( genuinely so), and many different installations throughout the gallery altered the perceptions of everyone there of that great and priceless collection. I do not hesitate to recommend him and look forward to our next collaboration."
