We were brought in by Black Skull to help realise their creative vision for The BBC World Showcase in 2017. Held at a venue in Liverpool, the brief called for a 20 minute large scale projection mapping experience. Alongside the projection and animation extravaganza, there was live choreography, stunt performers, many dancers and notably, snow inside the venue. The set was a 30m by 9m projection surface with some apertures to allow the performers and stunt men to interact with. As well as an LED screen arranged as a cylindrical hood we also had 6 PufferSpheres to work on.
Before any of our work began, hundreds of hours of BBC content had to be collated, reviewed and considered — identifying the right material to build the experience around before the creative work could begin.
The challenge of this project was the coordination of multiple moving elements. The projection had to work in sync with the choreography of dancers and stunt performers on stage, including the indoor snow. All had to land as part of a single, cohesive experience with each element dependent on the others working correctly.
Our experience in live events was central to how we approached the brief. Understanding how performance and projection interact in a live environment and planning for the variables that come with it, meant the stage and performance elements ran seamlessly. With our team of 7 designers, 4 of which located to Liverpool for a week, we developed fantastic concepts and final pieces. Throughout the process we worked closely with Black Skull to keep the delivery aligned with their creative vision from start to finish.
